IELTS Writing Task: 10 (Line Graph and Table)

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. 

The graph and table below show the average monthly temperatures and this average number of hours of sunshine per year in three major cities. Summerise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.


The data provides information on average temperatures and annual hours of sunshine in London, New York and Sydney.

Overall, London is the coldest city and has the fewest hours of sunshine. New York had the hottest summers, but Sydney enjoys the warmest overall climate..

The temperature patterns for London and New York are similar, although New York has warmer summers and cold winters. In both cities, peaks occur in July/August, at 23 degrees in London and 29 degrees in New York. In contrast, Sydney’s hottest weather is in December/January when temperatures average of around 5 degrees compared with 8 degrees in London. On the other hand, Sydney’s lowest temperature in July is over 15 degrees.

As far as hours of sunshine are concerned, New York and Sydney have similar averages of 2,535 and 2,473 hours respectively. London, however, has a much lower average of 1,180 hours.

  1. The graph illustrated provides information about avarage of temprature range over a month, and variation in time duration of sunlight falling on three different cities, i.e, New York, London, and Sydney over the year
    Furthermore, the study of table given shows that Sydney recieve highest amount of sunlight, i.e 2473, therefore, the city is warmest. However, London percieve least duration of sunlight, i.e, 1180 and hence, it is coolest place according to table.
    The lines of graph shows that Sydney has highest temprature approx 25 in January and lowest upto 15 in July. A dip can be seen in curve of Sydney in month of July. Whereas, New York and London depicts surge in their curve in month of July.
    New York have highest temperature approximately upto 30 and lowest is less than 5 in January. In addition to this, London has peak in temperature in between 20 to 25 while least in month of January, i.e, less than 10. Further this place recieve 1180 of sunlight in a year
    The lowest temprature can be seen in two months of the year, i.e, in January and Decembe Highest temperature only in July in all three cities..

    Overall, New York and London have the highest temperature in mid of July while Sydney gives the lowest rate of sunshine.

    At the beginning of the month, January, London and New York temperature started from around 8 hours and 4 hours respectively, at the same time Sydney gets the highest daylight approximately 26 hours. After that, the temperature of London and New York slightly increased and in the first week of April New York cross the line of London and again those lines grew up until mid of July, New York almost reached the line 30 hours while London gets about 23 hours. From here both are decreased abruptly to the end of the year, New York fell to 5 hours and London hours declined around 9.

    Sydney started amazingly with 26 hours in January it continued up to February third week then it starts falling steadily till mid of July it reached almost 15 hours line. However, Sydney again started rose up to the end of the year it got the hours about 25 which is almost similar to the beginning of the year. Moreover, after completing the whole year we can see the number of total hours in three different cities like 1180, 2535, and 2473, accordingly London, New York, and Sydney.

    Overall, New York had the most hours of annual sunshine, closely followed by Sydney, while London had the least. The average monthly temperature was the highest for New York. Additionally, London and New York had similar patterns of rising and falling temperatures.
    The average monthly temperature in London and New York started at 8 degrees and 4 degrees, respectively, in January, and slightly increased till the mid of March. The average temperature in New York peaked soon, reaching 30 degrees in July. Although London had its peak in the same month, the average temperature was only 23 degrees. Following July, both cities faced a steady decline in temperatures. At the end of the year, London’s average monthly temperature was 10 degrees while it was 5 degrees for New York. Contrary to the above, Sydney’s hottest month was January, at 26 degrees. The temperature kept falling till July, which was the coldest month, at 15 degrees, following which, there was a constant rise in temperature. The city touched 25 degrees at the end of December.
    New York reported the maximum annual hours of sunshine (2535 hours), followed by Sydney (2473 hours). Meanwhile, London reported the lowest hours of sunshine of the three cities, with a meagre 1180 hours of sunshine in the year.

    Overall, average monthly temperature of Sydney is high during first and last two months of year while in contrast average monthly temperature of the London and New York are lower. However, New York and Sydney have less difference in the numbers in terms of total hours of sunshine per year considering less hours of sunshine of London city.

    In the first two months of year, the highest temperature recorded for the Sydney is just above 25 degrees. From then on, from the March, it decreased to around 15 degrees till July and again rose up around 23 degrees in October while during the last two months it is recorded nearly equal to 25 degrees. Total hours of sunlight of the city are 2473 hours.

    In contrast to Sydney, numbers for the London and New York are completely opposite. During the first two months, temperatures recorded were between 5 and 10 degrees and from March then reached to peak of nearly 30 degrees for New York and around 25 degrees for London and again decreased in last two months to about 5 degrees to 10 degrees. Total hours of sunshine for the London are 1180 hours while for the New York are 2535 hours.
